Reflecting on our conversation with Henry Chesbrough about Chapter 10, we revisited the origins of open innovation, which was first explored within large companies as an alternative to traditional internal R&D. Henry discussed how large companies initially used open innovation to find new pathways to market for their internal research (inside-out OI) and to source innovation inputs from external partners (outside-in OI).
Over the past 20 years, the landscape has evolved significantly. We talked about how large companies now actively engage with startups, universities, and accelerators, making these partnerships a central part of their innovation strategies. Henry provided an insightful overview of the current state of open innovation processes in large companies, highlighting the unique challenges they face.
